Among these, requests for cassette tapes have accounted for a significant portion of our orders in recent years, so we’ve been expanding our selection of them since the late 2010s.

They’ve garnered attention not only from enthusiasts but also from the “streaming generation”—who were previously unaware of cassette tapes’ very existence—and as a result, the number of new releases has increased dramatically since 2020. The Musique69 staff, who grew up in the cassette tape era, are absolutely thrilled.

At our store, we focus on selecting titles that are not currently available through general distribution channels, such as large retailers. We scour Europe and the U.S. for recent releases with limited distribution channels - such as those sold exclusively through official websites or subject to export restrictions - as well as new deadstock copies of classic albums that have been out of print for decades, and lesser-known but unmissable titles for enthusiasts (even for the same title, there are often many variations in specifications if you look closely).

Cassette tapes have long been considered a niche, retro format with little demand here in Japan, so our store has been selling them on a small scale for over 20 years. However, in recent years - coinciding with the sharp depreciation of the yen - we’ve seen a dramatic surge in inquiries from customers living overseas. Since our procurement costs have skyrocketed, our retail prices have risen proportionally in recent times. However, because we carry a large inventory of titles that are virtually unavailable overseas and have all but disappeared from circulation, we’re now seeing a reversal where our imported goods are being exported once again. We strongly encourage enthusiasts living in Japan not to miss out on these items either!

Nevertheless, cassette tapes have a narrow dynamic range (in a good way), and their playback characteristics make them sound more powerful and bold, which has led to them being reevaluated by many music fans in recent years.
